Dengue Fever on Bali

The Jakarta Post reports that health authorities in Bali are warning people to be on guard against a new outbreak of dengue fever, a disease cyclically tied to the onset of the rainy season.

Bali recorded 12,000 cases of dengue fever in 2010, linking the outbreak to 34 deaths.

We are asking the public to pay attention to puddles formed after the rain because those will provide perfect breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary vector of dengue. The puddles should be drained immediately.

In recent weeks, local hospitals in Bali have recorded an increase in dengue
fever cases. Sanglah General Hospital recorded 29 dengue cases in the first
two weeks of 2012.

One hospital official in Denpasar said that traditionally, cases reach their peak by the middle of the year. This year’s exceptionally heavy rainy season is expected to add to the possibility of an increase in dengue cases followings last year’s reported decrease.

An anti-malarial officer from east Denpasar said that new housing developments may be a hidden source of new cases. Unattended puddles of waters at construction sites may be breeding grounds for mosquito larvae.

I worked in Pharaceutical industry for 14years and have been to bali 6 times. My wife is a mosquito magnet and would average 30-40per 2week holiday. We were not aware of Dengue fever in Bali until very recently and have a 2year old child
we wanted to avoid deet on our child and used an Autan repellent which contains picaridin. In 16days I received 1 bite when I left one morning without repellent, mother and child received Zero bites.
We stayed in a villa and asked the owners to plant the Liligundi a few weeks before we arrived.
The mosquito which causes dengue fever bites during the day.A classic place to find them is in the footwell of a car.So if you are at the beach and need to catch a cab home put some repellent on first.

    Hi,
We were in Bali from April 27 to May 2, the 3 first days close to Candidisa (East Bali) and the last days in Ubud. We walked two times with a guide through the rice teraces and the jungle. The weather was sometimes rainy in Ubud.

My 8 y.o. daughter has now high fever (39.5 C) and I’m worried she catched the dengue fever. What probability? Should I go to a doctor? She was biten two times.

    Thanks.

I would definitely take your daughter to a doctor. Even if it’s not Dengue Fever, it’s always better to have a doctor check out why a child has a fever.
